In the development and NGO community, one of the most commonly asked questions is:
How do we get information that matters to those who need it most?
The people who need information the most, live on the margins of society without access to the Internet, Email, Podcasting and all the other sexy new innovations in ICT. However, the use of mobile phones in marginalized communities is high and we intend to make the most of it!
We have developed FREE, easy to use, interactive voice response software to deliver audio information in any language over mobile phones and landlines. It is also able to receive voice messages and SMS.
This open source system can be used to engage communities in a 2 way conversation via IVR and voice messages around any number of issues. Think of the fight against HIV and the need to share accurate information with a wide variety of people. Or a crisis scenario, like a cholera epidemic, where access to basic information and first aid advice can save lives. Innovative users have used Freedom Fone to create mini audio dramas that embed a social issue in a compelling serialized story. There are a myriad other uses to which Freedom Fone can be put in agriculture, health, crisis mitigation, citizen journalism and election monitoring, to name just a few scenarios.
The Kubatana Trust of Zimbabwe’s Freedom Fone Project needs your help. We are looking for volunteers for remote technical support, to assist with bug reporting, testing, training and development. We welcome all assistance and feedback on your Freedom Fone experience.
This is your opportunity to do something practical for those less fortunate!
