Job Description

General Description

This is a contractual consultant assignment.  The location post for this consultancy is Nairobi, Kenya. The consultant will assist in developing specifications for software programming applications and will modify/maintain the existing software. The Consultant will also develop, modify and maintain systems applications that may be customized or standardized.  The consultant will participate in design and coding activities as directed.



Primary responsibilities with regard to some key products and services offered by Development Gateway:

  • Design/code applications following specifications using the appropriate tools 
  • Contribute to the design and development of cutting-edge software components
  • Explore new software development technologies and techniques
  • Perform maintenance programming for existing version. Performs custom programming upon request 
  • Assume responsibility for ongoing data architecture for product(s)
  • Document code and report on project deliverables
  • Perform unit and regression testing of own development work, assist Quality Assurance Analysts during the pre-launch testing process
  • Contribute ideas and suggestions in support of DG’s goals of innovation and continuous improvement
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience

  • Minimum five years’ increasingly complex server side (EJB/JSP/Hibernate) development experience
  • Drupal and/or Java experience, preferable working with enterprise level software
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of object-oriented programming languages/concepts
  • Experienced working in a component-based Enterprise software development environment
  • Experience with SQL and database concepts, also database driven applications
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of Linux / UNIX and/or Windows environments
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work with diverse groups of people
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related discipline
  • Familiarity with source control systems (CVS, SVN) desirable

  • Knowledge relating to the area in which analysis and coding is performed

  • Familiar with agile methodologies, test-driven development and continuous integration
  • Experience in the field of international development would be preferred.
  • French speakers would be preferred.
