Kipokezi Apps Challenge - HackathonAnyone

The Apps Challenge Hackathon will be held in iHUB Nairobi over the weekend of the 4th/5th/6th May 2012. Winning teams/individuals can refine their ideas whilst working with mentors of ForgetMeNot Africa, Safaricom and iHUB. On Sunday 6th May the final ideas, code and business case from each App will be presented to the judging panel and the winner will be then be announced.

Participants such as concerned citizens, discipline experts, engineers, scientists, and software developers attend events hosted in cities around the world. At these events, individuals collaborate with others by forming teams focused on solving a particular challenge. The teams compete with other teams around the world to utilize publicly available data to design innovative “solutions” to a pre-determined series of global “challenges.” The challenges are collected prior to the event from supporting organizations.
How it Works
The event embraces collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing solutions to global challenges.
The International Space Apps Challenge is an international codeathon-style event that will take place over a 48 hour period in cities on all seven continents – and in space – on the weekend of 21-22 April 2012. The iHub will host this event in Nairobi.

One of the opportunities is through the Sinapis 2012 Entrepreneur Fellowship Program. Sinapis is an NGO in Nairobi providing advanced business training, investment capital and mentorship for the most innovative, scalable and sustainable start-ups in Kenya.

Sinapis partners with Acton Business School, an accredited and highly ranked MBA school in the US. Accepted entrepreneurs receive six months of intensive, advanced business training that is customized for early stage businesses. The highest performers that graduate from the Sinapis Entrepreneur Fellowship Program get to compete in front of investors from the US for investment capital of between $10-$100,000. By 20th April, all you need to submit is your App idea, then you have another 7 days to which you can add code to it before the judging panel make a decision on the shortlist for the Hackathon final.


The Hackathon final is from the 4th-6th May at the iHUB where you can work with mentors to help complete and refine your app. Each final  idea, code and business case will be presented to the judging panel who will select 1 winning team/individual. Although there's only 1 winner, other approved apps can still be published so the taking part may be just as good as winning.

About the Film

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.
