Waza (Swahili for “Active Thinking”) Experience aims to foster active thinking and creativity in Kenyan youth. We are looking for iHub Green or Red members to volunteer their time to help mentor the next generation of Kenyan techies. The idea for Waza was born when several members of the iHub community came together and wanted to tackle a noted lack of emphasis on creative thinking and problem solving in the traditionalKenyan education system.
Waza essentially grooms the next generation (kids between the ages of 10 - 18) intothoughtful technologists, researchers, and innovators, equipped with the “soft skills” needed to create better solutions for Kenya and Africa. By instilling creativity, problem-solving/creative thinking, and communication skills in these children, we want to help make Kenya’s next generation of technologists even better equipped to adapt and innovate! We believe that if the next generation of techies have such skills PLUS the technical know-how & skills (as they are exposed to at Kids Hacker Camp
), we've got a next generation of superstars!
WazaExperience will bring together 20 students between the ages of 10 - 18 from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds on the 2nd Saturday of the month at the iHub UX Lab. The program will run from May through October and incorporates and builds towards the Kids Hacker Camp quarterly sessions (held every April, August, and November during the school holidays). Our curriculum—grounded in design thinking principles and Kenyan culture/context—
aims to inspire children to be more creative, facilitate problem-solving, and improve communication skills while also teaching skills in UX and market research and entrepreneurship.
Are you are passionate about working with youth in a mentorship andtraining capacity and available on the second Saturday of the month (May - Oct 2014)? Please sign up to join us in volunteering with Waza Experience!
