NRBUZZ: Drones for Agricultural Monitoring in Kenya

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), commonly known as drones, in various fields of study is now a reality. A drone is commonly thought of as an aircraft without a human pilot on-board. Drones are now being used in a wide range of sectors such as conservation, search & rescue missions, warfare, agriculture and more recently, the delivery of goods from supermarkets.

This month’s session of iHub’s Nairobi Research Buzz (#NRBuzz) will focus on the potential use of drones to autonomously capture images in agricultural fields as a substitute for field agricultural extension officers (who can be quite scarce in Kenya). The session will be led by Dr. Nicolas Jouandeau and Lawrence Nderu (JKUAT) who form part of a research working group at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology (JKUAT) on the same topic.

Maize is a popular food crop in Kenya, yet with climate change challenges, harvests have become unpredictable. Drones can possibly be used to gather more details from the maize fields to help provide farmers and planners with more information on the crop and possible yields.

The session is a must-attend for hardware enthusiasts and researchers looking to discuss the benefits, challenges, and areas of further inquiry regarding practical applications of UAV technology.

Details are as follows. No RSVP necessary, but kindly arrive on time as we will begin promptly at 5:30 pm.

Date: Thursday, 28th August 2014
Time: 5:30pm – 7 pm
