NRBUZZ: “Learning about a (Low-Tech) Technology”

Unfortunately, J Schwan (Solstice Mobile) who was previously set to speak at NRBuzz is no longer able to present at our May NRBuzz.

Instead, we are honored to have Emilia Tjernström, a PhD candidate in Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California, Davis!

Date: THIS Tuesday, 20th May 2014

Time: 5:30PM-7:00PM

Venue: iHub Research office (2nd Floor of Bishop Magua Centre) <– NOTE: it is not at iHub this month!

Emilia will talk about ongoing research on how households learn about new technologies. Within the context of a large-scale Randomized Control Trial (RCT) focused on measuring the socio-economic impacts of a new hybrid maize seed, she is hoping to better understand (i) the types of information that matter for adoption, (ii) how information spreads between participants, and (iii) whether study participants can be classified as different learner “types” that respond differently to information. She will explain the methodology used for each of these research questions, which includes the use of tablet-based photo matrices to elicit social networks, and an experimental learning game. During the talk, we will do an interactive demonstration of the experimental game that will be used to model participants’ learner-types.

Emilia Tjernström

Emilia Tjernström is a PhD candidate in Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California, Davis. In addition to her research in Kenya, she is studying various topics in development and behavioral economics, including the impact of a rural business development program in Nicaragua, subjective expectations about flood losses in Fiji, and how to use telecommunications data to learn about vulnerability.
