Expert Talk – IBM’s Research Dr. Kommie Weldemariam
On Tuesday, March 11, 2014 from 1:00 PM, Dr. Kommie Weldemariam from IBM Research will be giving a talk at the AkiraChix space on the ground floor of Bishop Magua Centre. He will give an overview of overview of IBM Research – Africa as well as brief them on our forthcoming scientific colloquium. Covering ‘Africa in the New Era of Computing’, the colloquium will take place on March 18th. He will also talk about how the Watson technology shall be applied in Africa as well as introduce an exciting upcoming inter-university competition dubbed “Asili za Afrika” where students from Kenyan universities will get to compete against each other based on African indigenous knowledge. Prizes will be awarded to the top schools and students.

Dr. Komminist Weldemariam is a Research Scientist at IBM Research – Africa. He focuses on developing novel techniques, tools and systems for smart delivery of services (e.g., education, agriculture, water).
Dr. Weldemariam is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at School of Computing, Queen’s University (Canada) where he has focused on designing tools and techniques for automated analysis, characterization, and detection of malicious activities on the Web.
Prior to this, he was a Research Scientist (with tenure-track title) at Fondazione Bruno
Kessler, Trento (Italy) where he focused on novel ways of using technology to foster economic and social development, often targeting areas characterized by a low penetration of ICT. He was a contractual Professor at the University of Trento (Italy) and a visiting researcher in the Security Laboratory at the University of California, Santa Barbara CA (USA).
Dr. Weldemariam possesses a unique combination of research and development skills
gained while working in both academia and industry. His expertise includes Software
Engineering, Business Intelligence, Security, ICTD, and Electronic Voting Systems. He has co-authored more than 45 scientific articles. He has served as program committee and (co-)chair for various conferences and workshopes including the 15th IEEE International Symposium on High Assurance Systems Engineering (HASE) and The 8th IEEE International Workshop on Security, Trust and Privacy for Software Applications (SRPSA).
He received a B.S. (2003) in Computer Science from Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), a M.Tech (2006) in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (India) and a Ph.D. (2010) in Information Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Trento (Italy). He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
