3 startups from the mLab make CIO top 100
Kenya Education Network (KENET) are this years winners of the prestigious CIO 100 Annual Awards. KENET offers Internet connectivity to educational institution in addition to linking them with a research network. The CIO East Africa CIO 100 annual awards recognize institutions that deploy ICT in an innovative manner while bringing out business value at the same time. KENET’s entry into the awards . The award was issued on Wednesday evening at a special gala and dinner ceremony hosted by CIO East Africa at the Safari Park Hotel.
KENET received the award for their project that seeks to provide Internet connectivity to educational institutions. KENET through several partners has invested more than Ksh. 10 million on the project and is already getting return on investment in less than three years. KENET has six Internet points of presence (POPs) connecting over 61 learning institutions in Kenya. KENET also has a solution that allows members from one institution to roam on Internet networks of other institutions at no fee.
The first runners up at the awards was Eat Out Kenya. Eat Out was founded by WebSimba in 2009 and aims to “revolutionize the eating experience for both diners and restaurants . “Eat Out was recognized for their project that has seen many restaurants having an online presence where diners can browse through menus and make restaurant bookings. With over 250 listed restaurants, the site’s traffic has grown from under 5,000 visitors per month in January 2010 to more than 50,000 visitors at the moment. Eat Out was deployed in about 12 months with an aim to achieve return on investment in six months. The project has already achieved its return on investment.
Started in 1987 and offering 75,000 products to over 200,000 customers a day, Nakumatt Holdings was able to scoop second runners up. Started in July 2005, Nakumatt’s winning project was titled “IT enabled miscellaneous products and services”. The project offers services such as: electronic airtime distribution and dispensing from Tills; Utility bill collection for services such as Safaricom’s Post Paid and Nairobi Water; Cash back (bank withdrawal) at tills for Equity Customers. The projected was deployed over a six month duration and has been able to achieve return on investment.
