Formal Launch for m:lab East Africa

m:lab East Africa will be launched formally on 16th June, 2011 at 10:00am – 11:30am.  The lab is hosted by the mLab Consortium which includes Nairobi’s *iHub_, eMobilis, the World Wide Web Foundation, and the University of Nairobi School of Computing and Informatics.  The launch event will happen at the new premises of m:lab East Africa and iHub on Bishop Magua Centre off Ngong Road (directly opposite the Uchumi Hyper), Nairobi, Kenya. This inauguration of m:lab’s facilities will bring together guests from the innovation and entrepreneurship community including government agencies, private sector and development organisations. Key speakers will include Dr. Bitange Ndemo – Permanent Secretary, Kenya’s Ministry of Information and Communication (Guest of honor), Paul Kukubo – CEO, Kenya ICT Board, Mr. Johannes Zutt (Country Director, World Bank), Ms. Heli Sirve (Ambassador, Embassy of Finland), Mr. Ken Oyolla (General Manager, Nokia), and Erik Hersman (Co-Founder Ushahidi and *iHub_).

m:lab East Africa is the region’s new incubation facility for entrepreneurs and innovators with a focus on mobile technology. The lab aims to facilitate demand-driven innovation by local and regional entrepreneurs, ensuring that breakthrough low-cost, high-value mobile solutions can be developed and scaled-up into sustainable businesses that address social and economic needs. The facility’s services include business incubation, training, consumer research and application testing. The facility will also assist developers and entrepreneurs to access capital for scale up of their innovations as well as to access markets. The lab’s activities are aimed at helping to make the East Africa region a global hub for mobile innovation.

The launch for m:lab East Africa will happen a day after PIVOT25, its mobile applications developer competition and conference. More information about the formal launch event is available on the lab’s website.
