iHub Goes to the Movies: The Social Network

How do you use Facebook? To share updates with friends and acquaintances and reconnect with old ones? To find out about or promote events? To publicize your business? To express yourself as an activist? … To procrastinate?

Whether you love it or hate it, it’s hard to not be impressed by how ubiquitous Facebook has become. In just over five years and now with more than 500 million users worldwide, Facebook is firmly established as an indispensable – and so far unrivaled – tool for connecting and staying in touch online. But how did it all start?

“People want to go on the internet and check out their friends, so why not build a website that’s friends, pictures, profiles. I’m talking about taking the entire social experience of college and putting it online,” said one of the founders of Facebook in a new film about how a group of undergrads first created the online social network in their college dorm room.

Here’s the trailer:

The Social Network” is opening this week in Nairobi. iHub has reserved a few rows of seats for members next Tuesday, November 2 to take advantage of Fox Theatre’s “Tuesday Poa!” For Kshs 450, the deal includes popcorn, soda or water, hotdog or chocolate, and a movie ticket. (Kshs 250 for a movie ticket alone.)

We’ll meet at the Fox Theatre in Sarit Center at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday night. (Everyone is responsible for his/her own transportation and for purchasing the ticket.)

After the show we’ll do a drawing for “Social Network” t-shirts, generously donated by Fox Theatres.

So mark your calendar for iHub’s night at the movies next Tuesday, November 2. It will be a good chance to hang out with your friends and colleagues from iHub while being inspired by how a small group of entrepreneurs who – while just looking for a better way to connect with people on a small campus – created a whole new network that now circles the globe.
